Happy weekend Journeyers. This last week it has felt like we are definitely transitioning out of Late Summer and into Autumn. The mists in the fields in the morning, the cooler temperatures, the fungi popping up all over the place, the feeling in my lungs (one of the autumnal meridians) and of course the drawing in of the evenings show this to be true. In the Five Element map this is a move from the Earth element (feeling nurtured, nourished and fully present) into the Metal element (feeling clearer, more focused and wanting to 'clear out the back of the metaphorical and actual cupboards). The 'feeding' cycle of the five elements shows that with the progression of the seasons, comes the cycle of the elements. In this cycle Earth gives up its ores to create metal- the precious/semiprecious gems and minerals arise out of the belly of the Earth. This is a precious gifting. So this weekend I invite you to look around and focus on what is precious to you, what do you feel blessed by, what do you really appreciate in your life. There are many troubles and challenges in the world right now. Take a moment to focus in on the good stuff. Wishing you a wonderful weekend, Sarah-Jayne x
Happy Autumn weekend journeyers. The palate of autumn is all around, the light is different now, the sun lower in the sky. The trees and hedgerows are lighting up with rich jewels. In us the lung meridian is the one that links us to our spiritual light, our connection to the bigger picture. How can you 'shine your light' in the world this weekend? The trees are de-lighting all around, let them show you. Have a delightful weekend, love Sarah-Jayne ✨ 🍃✨
Morning journeyers, here's a lovely scene from my muddy walk yesterday, there was much bogginess in the red Mid Devon earth!
It reminded me that the Earth element holds the Water element within the Five Element model and without this gorgeous holding there would be no containment and no means of harnessing the power of Water.
This ability to control Water in held by the Spleen meridian and when out of balance can show up as stuckness or dampness at this time of year. This will show itself as aches and pains, stiffness, foggy-headedness and general lethargy.
One of the best ways to create some aeration in our body 'soil' is with movement, the Spleen meridian loves movement, and walking in particular, as Spleen 1, the first point on the meridian is on the big toe.
So if it is taking you a while to get going in the morning try and build in a quick walk or even marching on the spot and feel the 'bog' within turn to finely tilled soil.
Happy Wednesday everyone, love Carol xx
Morning journeyers, I don't know about you but I can feel the energy of the land beginning to descend towards Autumn; some leaves are turning, the acorns are brown and the gentle breaking down of foliage has begun.
This time of year I always feel very solidly in my body, the Earth element connection to my flesh and muscles as I work my Stomach and Spleen meridians walking the lanes and fields. These meridians either start or end in the feet and keep us grounded, present and nourished.
This beautiful pagan chant is one of my favourites and is a great way to appreciate and nourish the connection between the land and our body, I love to say or sing it as I walk.
Wishing you a wonderful Earthy day, with love Carol xx
The Earth element shows itself climately as dampness, in Late Summer we can see and feel this dampness everywhere, the morning dewy grass, the damp quality of good soil and the dampness in the air. The plump ripe fruit and vegetables similarly have that holding quality of moistness or dampness.
In balance this moisture rich environment is nourishing and life giving. Too much dampness in nature however can lead to rotting as there is waterlogging which impedes the flow of life giving oxygen....and so it is also in our bodies. Too much dampness in the body can lead to sluggishness in our digestion and energy levels generally, we may feel heavy limbed and achy, people who have arthritis may feel particularly incomfortable as we go into Late Summer. In our minds we can feel foggy headed, have a poor memory and find it hard to concentrate and get going in the morning.
Here are some ways we can keep our Earth element healthy and balanced with food.
- Watch our intake of sweet food. Sweetness is the taste of Late Summer but an excess of any sweet food can lead to the stagnation; artificial and processed sugar is particularly damaging to the spleen meridian.
- Assist your digestion but chewing your food thoroughly
- Avoid eating late at night, the Stomach and Spleen have their lowest energy between 7 and 9pm
- Avoid cold and raw food in excess as these create dampness in the body
- Enjoy yellow and orange food which help tonify any Earth deficiencies
- Eat plenty of cooked greens this season as this will cut through any accumulated dampness
Lots of love to you on this monday and enjoy some Late Summer feasting, love Carol xx
Happy weekend journeyers. this morning we have a golden sun and gentle warm breeze. We are in the still point between summer and autumn. Now is a good time to to take stock of how life is, put successes in the metaphorical 'trophy cabinet' of your own personal harvest. Notice what has not gone so well. Was it a non starter or does it need more nurture?
In Creative Kinesiology we call this pause before a shift or change, gateway work. What are you taking through the gateway to autumn with you and what are you leaving behind? Pausing and taking stock means that you get clear on how to proceed, and not drag the old over the threshold. Enjoy! Sarah-Jayne x
Happy weekend Journeyers.
In the law of The Five Elements from Traditional Chinese Medicine wood (think trees, spring, growth, creativity, new ideas, structure, planning) controls earth (think river and road banks, late summer, harvest, being held, nurtured, nourished, supported.) In my former life as a commuter I often used to see trees on railway banks being chopped down or stunted, knowing there would be a landslip later...the earth element was not getting to be held by the tree roots. There would then need to be a repair job...the earth element would need refirming, restoring, mulching and given a way to be held often by a harder structure than tree roots. This got me thinking this morning about how I am really supporting my earth element. Which structures in my life are really holding me and which may lead to a metaphorical land slip. So this weekend notice the things in your life that bring holding, soft structure and nurture- do they need a repair job? Much love, Sarah-Jayne x
Morning journeyers, September feels all about softness to me; soft golden light, faded warmth, fleshy, ripe, juicy fruits, soft damp grass and plump berries, nature in all her fullness and abundance. A gentle balance between inside cosiness and precious outside time basking in soft sunshine. A time to really get to know the soft strength and supportiveness of the Earth element within and without.
Happy Wednesday everyone love Carol x
Good morning journeyers, I found some lovely pictures that I took when I visited 'The Lost Gardens of hellion' a couple of years ago of this beautiful Earth Goddess.
It reminded me that the Earth element is strongly linked to our physicality, our flesh and muscles in particular. As a Nutritional Therapist I'm a passionate believer in tending the soil of our body just as we would tend the soil of our garden and green spaces. The Earth element is associated with the flavour of sweetness and this is the flavour that we can easily get 'off track' with particularly with the western world being awash with processed carbs and sugary treats.
So keep your sweet treats as natural as possible, a juicy ripe nectarine, some raspberries or slices of crisp apples topped with almond butter.
Also remember that the Earth element feeds Metal and the Metal element is linked to the bowel and bowel flora. Sugar and processed carbs are well known to disrupt the balance of the healthy bacteria in our gut compromising our immune system, how efficiently we digest food, our mental health and much more.
So feel your bodies connection to the Earth and love it with naturally sweet food.
Lots of love, Carol xx
